Each day a billion new images are made, yet few will stand the test of time. In this presentation for B&H’s 2017 Optic Conference, renowned photographer Sam Abell ponders the question, “What makes a lasting photograph?” through image sequences that illustrate the lessons he has learned over the course of his long and distinguished career. Among the wisdom Abell shares is some formative advice he received from his father at the age of 15: Compose the picture and wait. Over the course of this lecture, Abell demonstrates how photographs are built by the decisions the photographer makes. His revealing insights include: bad weather makes good pictures; keep a low angle and look for strong structure; compose and then recompose to master the details; among many other tips. This is not a “greatest hits” slide show, but rather a step-by-step examination of how to achieve lasting images through the careful application of basic photo technique and critical vision. After watching, you will have a new appreciation for the way in which you see the world.
