Before you go out with your camera, do you think about what it is that you’re planning to photograph? For Fujifilm X-photographer Ruddy Roye, this starts with the lens he selects, based on his understanding of the subject matter in his frame. In this presentation for B&H’s 2017 Optic conference, Roye discusses his framing and lens choices for a series black-and-white portraits that he shot on assignment in Atlanta, Georgia. Roye’s go-to lens for portraits and street photography is the Fujifilm 23 mm f/2, a wide-angle 35mm equivalent lens that lets every one of his images communicate the powerful stories of both his subject and the environment they inhabit. After watching this video, you’ll have a better appreciation for how to select the right lenses and other photographic tools for success in your own work.
