Daniel Cartamil, PhD, is a marine biologist and conservation photographer at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He has studied sharks since 1993 and worked as a fisheries biologist in Alaska, California, and Mexico. His passion for the natural world inspired him to devote 10 years to photographing Baja, California's untamed wilderness for his new book, Baja's Wild Side (Sunbelt Publishing). Eileen Rafferty believes in making meaningful work and discovering something new every day. With an MFA in Photography/Film from VCU and a BS in Physiology from Penn State University, she currently teaches workshops and lectures on creative subjects around the country. She also freelances as a video editor, an Adjunct Professor, and heads a creative consultancy business to inspire and motivate clients to pursue and nurture a creative life. At B&H’s Optic 2019, photographer Lisa Langell talks about how and why we photograph, and she stresses that the most important part of your journey as a photographer is knowing the answer to the question, “Why do I photograph?” Langell reminds us that photography is not only transformative for the person taking the photo; a powerful image can have deep emotional impact on others, too. This is a great talk from a photographer who approaches her craft from psychological and technical perspectives.
