TASCAM Announces DR-10L Pro with Upgraded Features07/06/2023
TASCAM has announced the DR-10L Pro, an updated version of its popular lavalier microphone and miniature recorder combo. The DR-10L Pro expands the original version's feature set by adding increased microSDXC capacity, extended battery life, optional Bluetooth capabilities, timecode support, and, best of all, 32-bit float recording capability.
Because the recorder is tiny enough to hide right on your subject, the system eliminates the need for a boom mic operator or a wireless system that might be prone to interference or dropouts at a critical moment. The added 32-bit float recording means users don't have to worry about fine-tuning input levels. The unit uses dual analog-to-digital converters, which allows it to capture sound across a huge dynamic range, so levels that are clipping can be recovered and low-level takes can be normalized without adding noise.
The unit records MP3s or full PCM files at up to 48 kHz and supports microSDXC cards up to 512GB. A 3.5mm headphone jack is provided for monitoring. Power is supplied by two AAA batteries, and a pair of lithium batteries will give you up to 24.5 hours of recording time, depending on the settings. Alternatively, you can power the recorder via the USB-C port, which also allows you to transfer the files to your computer. An easy-to-read OLED panel shows you the battery level, recording status, and input levels instantly.
Adding TASCAM's AK-BT1 Bluetooth adapter (available separately) lets you control the recorder remotely via iOS or Android devices; in fact, you can control up to five DR-10L Pro units at once from the free CONTROL app. The Bluetooth adapter also lets you sync the recorder to timecode wirelessly using supported Atomos products, such as the Ultrasync Blue and the Ultrasync One. Timecode allows shooters to align audio and video recordings in post automatically, even when there's no audio from the camera, saving you a lot of time in the editing process. It's especially helpful for multi-camera productions. Thoughtfully, this B&H kit packages the DR-10L Pro with the AK-BT1 adapter for your shopping convenience.
The recorder also includes a limiter and an adjustable low-cut filter at 40, 80, 120, and 220 Hz that can be engaged to remove unwanted background noise often caused by air-conditioning equipment. The mic attaches via a locking 3.5mm Sennheiser-style connector, so you can swap out the included lav with a compatible substitute, if you prefer. The sliding recording switch pulls off the clever trick of being easy to use while making it difficult to stop a recording accidentally. In addition, the Lock function can be engaged to disable all the recorder's operations other than "recording stop," for additional peace of mind.
Finally, the DR-10L includes a free download of the iZotope RX Elements audio production software, which lets you edit and refine your recorded audio. Many recordists will particularly appreciate the inclusion of the Repair Assistant plug-in included with iZotope RX Elements. It uses machine learning to find and fix audio issues quickly and painlessly, making it easier than ever to address any sound issues that might crop up.
