Sony Releases Ultra-Compact Wireless Vlogging and Podcasting Microphones09/27/2023
Now it’s even easier to capture audio interviews in the field, thanks to Sony’s new wireless audio options, which include its podcasting ECM-S1 Wireless Streaming Microphone System and the ECM-W3 Wireless Microphone 1-Person and 2-Person Systems for vlogging. These new wireless mic options provide you with several connectivity options for webcasting or vlogging without adding weight or bulk to your setup, freeing you from arduous pairing processes and manual settings.
ECM-S1 Wireless Streaming Microphone System
Designed to pick up the human voice for natural, clear recordings, the ECM-S1 Wireless Streaming Microphone is built like a desktop podcasting mic that offers you a choice of wired or wireless audio transmission to your camera or computer. It automatically pairs via Bluetooth 5.3 using the included receiver, and the receiver can be installed on the Multi-terminal shoe on your Sony camera to sync with your video. Bluetooth 5.3 provides fast, low-energy transmission to preserve quality using the LC3plus codec, and it allows line-of-sight connections up to 500' away.
Alternatively, you can connect the receiver to a computer using its USB-C output, or plug the microphone directly into your computer using the USB-C connector for fully wired streaming and conferencing. Other connection options include a 3.5mm stereo mini jack on the receiver for monitoring or recording, and the microphone features a 3.5mm headphone output jack for monitoring (when using a USB connection).
You can select between three different pickup patterns using a switch on the side of the microphone, including monoaural unidirectional, omnidirectional, and stereo unidirectional, depending on the area you wish to cover. A snap-on pop filter reduces any voice popping when you are closer to the mic, and it also features noise- and low-cut filter choices to reduce air conditioning or wind/vibration frequencies. The ultra-compact mic mounts on a tilting, snap-on desktop stand, or you can install it on a boom or mic stand using its 1/4"-20 bottom thread.
ECM-W3 Wireless Microphone System
The ultra-lightweight ECM-W3 wireless mic system comes in two configurations: 1 microphone with a 1-channel receiver to capture a host or one-sided interview, and 2 microphones with a 2-channel receiver to capture a two-sided interview. The microphone is about the size of a pack of gum and, like the ECM-S1, automatically pairs with the receiver via Bluetooth 5.3 using the LC3plus codec. It also features noise- and low-cut filter selection, and it adds a 3-step, 0-20dB attenuator switch to eliminate clipping.
Connection options include a 3.5mm input jack on the microphone if you want to add an external microphone. The receiver mounts on your camera’s Multi Interface Shoe and also features a USB-C port for USB audio and a 3.5mm stereo output jack. Both units are designed to be dust- and moisture-resistant, and they each feature power and link LED indicators. A fur windscreen is included with the mic, and you can purchase an optional stand for the receiver if you’re using it independently from the camera.
Even though these mic systems are so compact, they pack a lot of power inside. The ECM-S1 desktop streaming microphone features an internal battery that lasts up to 13 hours, or it can be charged and powered using the USB-C port during a direct connection. Its receiver is powered via the Multi Interface on a supported camera, via the USB-C port when plugged into a computer, or it can operate for up to three hours using its own internal battery.
The transmitter microphones and receivers in the ECM-W3 wireless systems operate for up to 6 hours on a single charge. They are all charged together in a convenient charging case, which features a USB-C connector for powering via a power adapter, computer, or power bank.
