In this B&H video, National Parks at Night workshop leader Gabriel Biderman braves the elements to share valuable tips about setting up your camera for night photography. Starting with a photograph shot in program mode, Biderman explains how choosing manual mode at night allows you to explore the variables of ISO, aperture, and shutter speed for ultimate control. Next, with his camera set to manual, Biderman demonstrates how adjusting your shutter speed can be used to emphasize moving elements in a long exposure image. Similarly, he reveals how changing your aperture can alter the appearance of direct light sources in your photos—yielding a soft-edged glow as the aperture is opened to its widest settings, or the increasing prominence of star points around the lights as your aperture is stopped down. After watching this video, you’ll have a better understanding of how to harness your camera settings and realize your intentions for the picture, allowing you to fine tune your photography to tell the story the way that you want.
