Panasonic Goes Ultra-Wide with a New 20-60mm Zoom

Positioned as the go-to kit lens for L-mount shooters, Panasonic’s new Lumix S 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom adds a fresh dimension to its full-frame mirrorless system. This compact yet highly versatile lens offers a unique range, from an ultra-wide 20mm to a normal 60mm focal length when fully extended.

Measuring only 3.4" long and weighing just over a mere 12 oz, this sleek optic affords all-day portability while supporting versatile shooting opportunities, from landscapes to snapshots. When zoomed to 20mm, the expansive field of view provides maximum coverage for small interior spaces and other tight spots and, at 60mm, the slightly long-normal field of view is great for isolating subjects and homing in on details.

On the inside, this 20-60mm boasts 11-element, 9-group construction, which includes two aspherical elements, three extra-low dispersion elements, and one ultra high refractive index element to minimize chromatic and spherical aberrations and achieve superior MTF performance across the entire frame and zoom range.

Macro photographers will benefit from a high maximum magnification of 0.43x and a 5.9" minimum focusing distance, and a nine-blade rounded diaphragm contributes to satisfying bokeh quality. Videographers and macro photographers alike will also appreciate the minimal focus breathing exhibited when shifting between focal lengths.

When put to work, the lens’s high-speed stepping motor offers near-silent autofocus operation and excellent focus tracking, making this a great choice for videography and vlogging.

A rugged dust/splash-resistant exterior design protects the lens against dusty and rainy conditions, as well as cold temperatures down to 14°F. A fluorine coating also protects the front element against water and oil smudges.
