Returning for its fifth consecutive year, OPTIC 2019 was the best OPTIC yet! With our planet's environment changing at a rapid rate, the discussion was more poignant than ever. The four-day imaging event explored the inspiration, techniques, and equipment essential to capturing the great outdoors—with an emphasis on conservation. Richard P. At B&H’s OPTIC 2019, photographer Stephen Wilkes discussed his evolution as a photographer, since he was a teenager. His career has been a series of personal projects that helped him shape his vision and learn that his photographs could inspire change and make a difference. His latest project, Day to Night, looks at a variety of landscapes over a 24-48-hour period, and the changes that take place during that time. For inspiration, motivation, and a few laughs, check out Wilkes’s presentation. BIO: Stephen Wilkes has been widely recognized for his fine art and commercial photography. Wilkes has won numerous awards and honors and continues to exhibit his work in galleries and museums. Wilkes’s newest body of work is titled Day to Night™. He photographs from a fixed camera angle, continuously, for up to 15 hours. A select group of images are then digitally blended into one photograph, capturing the changing of time in a single frame.  Wilkes shoots editorials for major publications, as well as advertising campaigns for many of the country's foremost agencies and corporations.

At B&H’s Optic 2019, photographer Lisa Langell talks about how and why we photograph, and she stresses that the most important part of your journey as a photographer is knowing the answer to the question, “Why do I photograph?” Langell reminds us that photography is not only transformative for the person taking the photo; a powerful image can have deep emotional impact on others, too. The four-day imaging event will explore the inspiration, techniques, and equipment essential to capturing the great outdoors—with an emphasis on conservation. At B&H’s Optic 2019, commercial photographer Lanakila “Lana” MacNaughton shares her incredible story of achieving sobriety and developing an intense passion for photography. Lana shoots almost entirely with film, which she says gives her a deeper emotional connection to the subject. Over the past seven years, she has focused on photographing female motorcyclists, documenting and sharing their inspiring stories. Check it out!

Leading a team of creative marine educators, North employs storytelling as a tool to advance the methods of how science is communicated to the public.
