Stephen Mallon is a busy New York-based photographer, and has been a frequent speaker at the Event Space for many years. His career has been steadily rising and his prominence and success are models for all aspiring commercial and fine art photographers. This presentation follows Mallon's path from stock photography to a life-changing client who would slowly lead him to his ultimate dream clients, The New York Times Magazine and National Geographic. In addition, Mallon also discusses his evolution into filmmaking and how photographers need to diversify their creative talents to achieve their dreams. This presentation is an absolute must for the aspiring photographer.

After spending years traveling and documenting cultures around the world, photographer Erika Skogg returned to her hometown in Wisconsin and began to appreciate the deep Scandinavian ties there and in the surrounding communities. With a desire to explore the community's connection to the past, she created a project documenting Scandinavian-American culture in the Upper Midwest United States. At OPTIC 2019, she shared stories from the experience, as well as some photos and tips for those wanting to start a documentary photography project. BIO: Erika Skogg is a National Geographic Explorer who is currently documenting Scandinavian-American culture in the Upper Midwest, United States. She credits her Green Bay, Wisconsin, upbringing for her resistance to freezing temperatures and propensity for exploration. As a travel photographer, Skogg strives to create images that ignite a genuine interest in the unknown, highlight commonalities of the human experience, and encourage fascination instead of fear. By capturing unique attributes of cultures and landscapes abroad, she hopes to inspire the viewer to get up and go!
