Sigma Gives fp Camera Major Performance Boost with New Firmware

Sigma has just released Firmware v2.0 for its fp Camera. This is the first major update for the mirrorless camera and brings with it a host of new features and capabilities that should greatly improve the overall functionality of the camera, especially for video enthusiasts and cinematographers.

Speaking of cinematographers: The new firmware adds several new video features and capabilities to your fp camera, including support for DCI 4K 12-bit raw via an HDMI output. The update enables ProRes RAW over HDMI with the Atomos Ninja V and the Blackmagic RAW codec over HDMI with Blackmagic Video Assist. That’s a lot of information crammed into two small sentences, but the takeaway is that the fp camera now supports three different types of raw files: CinemaDNG, ProRes RAW, and BRAW.

The firmware update also adds several new and updated video playback and recording options, including the Cinemagraph feature. For those who don’t know: Cinemagraphs combine the movement of video with the static nature of a still to produce a unique hybrid image. In the past, these typically required specialized software—like Photoshop—to create. With the new software, you no longer have to do so much heavy lifting. Along with the Cinemagraph feature, another big announcement is that the firmware allows you to play back CinemaDNG footage on your camera and capture still images from a CinemaDNG movie file.

On top of the added file support and new video features—of which we only mentioned a few—the firmware update also delivers several enhancements and upgrades, including a boost to the overall image quality; autofocus is faster; and the accuracy of its evaluative exposure metering is improved.

As far as bugs go: The only significant issue that needed to be addressed was the flickering effect that would sometimes occur during certain lighting conditions. According to Sigma, the new firmware solves whatever was causing the flickering, so it should no longer be an issue in the future.

Firmware v2.0 adds so many new features to the fp, it’s almost like getting a new camera—at least, in terms of functionality. With countless new support features, capabilities, and a significant bug fix, this is a major update fp owners will want to download right away
