Before ChatGPT and “AI” took over the recent technology milieu, Matterport had been helping businesses create digital twins around the globe. Hold on―that doesn’t mean the brand is cloning and uploading brainwaves to an artificial intelligence application (although we’re pretty sure Matterport would like a hand in that design); digital twins are 3D representations of a space using photos and data to create immersive walkthrough AR or VR presentations for industries like real estate, retail, infrastructure, and technology, or really anything a photographer can dream up to boost their customer’s business.
What Matterport Can do for Photo/Video Pros
By creating digital twins, you can utilize your skills as a photographer not only to create photo-realistic 3D representation of a space to bring a viewer inside virtually, but you can then add structure and interactive features that can utilize metadata for business enhancements.
For Real Estate
Create floor plan walkthroughs for customers to visit and measure a space and visualize their own property within the space. Increase sales for hotels, rentals, and event spaces by providing accurate visualization for potential customers.
For Industrial Applications
Provide accurate schematic measurements for construction projects, inspections for fire safety, and familiarize new employees with maintenance procedures.
Show shoppers an accurate layout of your space so they can find what they need and reveal even more they may not have known about.
What does it mean to make your Space interactive? You can add numerous elements to the 2D/3D scene, so users can click on an element within the scene to reframe, add a video or closeup photo, nested digital twins, document attachments, simple text, or even live, continually updated data.

Matterport Cloud and Enterprise Tools
Many companies are located far from their customers or operate on a global scale. Rather than traveling to measure and experience on-site visuals, Matterport offers a cloud-based system that not only allows you to share, but also provide, image-editing tools, tagging tools, and measurement tools, while also providing seamless integration with industry-standard software applications such as SketchUp, Revit, AutoCAD, and many others.
Matterport can also integrate with Enterprise tools such as AWS IoT TwinMaker to bring real-world data into your digital twins. Live video feeds, processed data, mapping, sensor data, and physics-based data can be utilized within your twins using SaaS, SDKs, APIs, and AI pipelines.
Cameras and Services
There are so many ways to integrate digital twins into your business, but how does one capture all these images and schematics? The answer is: in many ways, using 360, Infrared, and LiDAR options.
MC250 Pro2 and MC300 Pro3 Cameras
As B&H has announced in the past, the Matterport MC250 Pro2 and MC300 Pro3 digital cameras capture 3D measurements and create virtual walkthroughs of your space. The cameras are managed and can integrate with the Matterport Cloud using the easy-to-use smartphone app for uploading and editing your captures. The measurement data is captured while you are recording, and then Matterport processes the data and presents it for sharing in your Cloud account.
The MC300 Pro3 adds LiDAR technology to create even more accurate measurements down to the millimeter, particularly important for accuracy in outdoor environments.
Axis Motorized Mount with a Smartphone
If you’d like to perform a quick and easy schematic and twin of your room, you can use your own iOS or Android smartphone with a Matterport app using the motorized Axis Smartphone Mount and a standard tripod.
Third-Party 360 Cameras and Leica BLK360 G1
There are also many other camera options to utilize Matterport technology, depending on your needs. Third-party 360 cameras such as Insta360 ONE X/ONE X2/ONE R, Ricoh Theta V/Theta SC2/Theta Z1, or the Leica BLK360, depending on your needs for 360 views, 2D or 3D spaces, and the level of measurement accuracy, can be used. For example, the Leica BLK360 features laser scanning and measurement built into the camera, and it also supports HDR images.
To create, edit, and share the capture of your scan location, or space, there are several software and service tools available to process your twins and are based around each space.
Capture is an easy-to-use smartphone app that captures and processes data on iOS or Android devices for upload to the Matterport Cloud. It captures data from your space, depth, and images using a supported camera.
Online Matterport Cloud
Every Matterport scan needs an account to upload, process, and edit your photos and data for your twin spaces. There are several account levels with different services, starting with a free account that offers archiving, support for iOS and Android captures, smartphone sharing, and editing features for one space at a time.
When you are ready to graduate, there are Starter, Professional, and Business accounts that can be upgraded to add more active spaces, users, camera support, capture services, and integration features.
If the time or location is difficult to schedule, Matterport can capture and process your space for you. The company can transform spaces within one to two days into a digital twin with metadata, mapping data, and interactive details in more than 700 cities globally.
Workshop is an editing app that allows you to edit your captured space. With this app you can add data, measurements, labels, tags, and all other customizations. It’s also easy to collaborate with other users to share editing tasks.
Showcase a free download for everyone―the way you send your audience through all your space walkthroughs, which can be linked via social media or a website for customers and viewers to experience your space fully.
Matterport Digital Pro
The Digital Pro app was designed specifically for real estate agents and brokers, and it provides all the specific tools that real estate requires to create an effective listing: easy to access floor plans, preview videos, HDR photos, and 3D tours.
You can also experience your digital twin space walkthroughs with a Meta Quest 3 VR headset, using the Matterport VR app to simulate walking through your space, for the ultimate immersion.
Publishing and Sharing
When you’re finished capturing and editing your space, you can embed the 3D model on your website, publish it to Google Street View, add it to your realtor.com or VRBO listing, send schematics to another business, or share Xactimate files for property assessments.
