It’s quite common to have an old computer die on you and not have it repaired, especially if it’s more than a few years old. But what can you do with the old carcass?  If a computer dies for any reason other than a dead hard drive, you can always convert the old drive into an external unit, and grab important files off the drive in the process. The same thing can be done if you install a larger…

If you're reading this, you probably own a camera or two, and maybe even a camcorder. You probably take them everywhere. And if they’re worth anything, you’re probably worried about damage from shocks and impacts. Here are two gadgets that will expand the creative possibilities of your gear and also protect it  from the forces of gravity.

Computers, tablets, digital whiteboards, multimedia projectors and laser pointers have changed the way lecturers and business people make presentations. But sometimes a good old-fashioned piece of paper is the most effective way to explain things to people. Canson’s Papershow Digital Pen Starter Kit combines the power of the computer with the straightforward simplicity of paper.

So, you’ve got a small network consisting of one server and a half dozen workstations, but the hard drive in the server is full. Do you rebuild the server with a larger hard drive? That could become one big headache, and your network will be down throughout the duration of the upgrade. The easiest solution is to add Network Attached Storage, or NAS, to your network.

I recently wrote about Drobo RAID storage arrays. They provide expandable storage with redundancy for the safekeeping of your data. The units that I reviewed are all available with instant savings from B&H until the end of June, 2010. I've just been made aware that there is an 8-bay unit that comes with free hard drives.

There was a time when only very large corporations needed RAID storage. RAID storage is still used by large corporations, but today you’ll also find small businesses and individual users taking advantage of its features. Data Robotics’ Drobo storage arrays make affordable entry points to failsafe storage, and they’re made all the more affordable with the instant savings you can get from B&H until the end of June.

It’s difficult to hold a camcorder while, say, climbing up a sheer face in Yosemite. But there are many camcorders on the market that allow hands-free operation. The LOREXvue Video Sunglasses will capture video while freeing your hands up for other duty. You put them on, turn them on and shoot video, all while doing whatever else you like. Whatever you see, the camera sees and captures.

Using a notebook computer as a source for HD content to be viewed on a big screen TV is becoming more and more common. With easy access to downloadable HD content and notebooks having hard drives large enough to store HD content and enough muscle to process it, there’s no reason not to view the content on an HDTV…

The television-broadcast world is nearing the end of its HDTV revolution. Almost every show on TV is now broadcast in HD. It’s time for consumer video gear to catch up. While most consumer-grade camcorders record in HD, many of the niche-type video recorders, such as those you can wear, are not yet capturing HD. But the Drift HD170 is.

SureFire flashlights are among the best in the world, but they’re not for everyone. One reason is that they’re relatively expensive for flashlights. That’s because they’re built to last, in the United States, and they’re backed by a lifetime warranty.

I remember, years ago, reading about a 40-inch CRT television set. It had a 4:3 aspect ratio, weighed several hundred pounds, and cost around $100,000. I think it was a Sony. It was completely impractical, but it got me to thinking that some day I wanted to own a TV set with a screen that size. Today I own a 46-inch flat panel, but I saw something this week that got me thinking again. Panasonic just announced its new 152-inch plasma display that should be available early next year.

Want to remain hands-free while you record video footage? A few weeks ago I wrote about camcorders that you can wear. One was a helmet cam, another was a pen that records video and the third was a pair of sunglasses that capture video. Those posts generated quite a bit of reader interest in other forms of wearable camcorders, so I decided to write about some more of these increasingly popular items.

There was a time when many households contained a projector screen, used mainly to show 8mm and Super 8 home movies and slide shows. Unfortunately for the manufacturers of those screens, camcorders and digital cameras made them more or less obsolete.
