Are you just getting into playing electric guitar? If so, thank you—it feels like there’s a dearth of us these days! But also, let’s address an issue you might be facing in purchasing your Instrument, best summed up by the following question:
“What kind of electric guitar is right for me?”
I know the answer my parents had for that question: “the cheapest,” but if you’re shelling out your own hard-earned dosh, deciding what kind of axe to purchase is a choice fraught with implications, both obvious and subliminal.
You see, different electric

Hi there! Do you have a rich, velvety voice that people compliment all the time? Do you have secret desires to cut out of your nine-to-five grind and get into the illustrious world of voice-overs? Of course you do! (You clicked the headline, didn’t you?)
Let me start off by telling you two things: To get sustainable voice-over work is harder than you’d think—lots of people want to do it, and networking, no matter the industry, is a deleterious task worthy of all your contempt. However, it’s never been easier to produce professional-grade

Recently, we’ve been hearing a lot of noise about high-resolution audio. Casual listeners might be wondering, what is high-resolution audio, anyway? Why does it sound better? Can we even determine that it sounds better? Answering these questions requires discussing digital formats such as PCM, MP3, and DSD—but don’t worry; this won’t be a dive into the technical weeds. To the extent that we’ll address science, it’ll only be in terms of practicalities.
But first, an anecdote: Before I was a professional recording/mixing engineer, I was a guy

Growing up in Miami, FL, in the 1980s and ’90s, I was exposed to a great deal of the Roland TR-808 sound. Found in roller skating rinks, and cars with “tricked out” systems across the city, the window-shaking, bone-shattering Miami Bass sound was literally inescapable. The other-worldly 808, with its long and resonant kick drums and toms, crispy snares and claps, and lighting fast hi hats was so pervasive, even my parents knew what an 808 was.

I fell in love with the futuristic bounce of the 808, and it was a big part of what

So, you want a new audio interface, eh? It’s not like the old days when there were only a few options. Now, there are a bunch of brands such as Apogee Electronics, Antelope, Audient, Focusrite, MOTU, PreSonus, Universal Audio, and Waves, and each manufacturer normally has several interfaces in its product line. You don’t want to buy something that will be insufficient for the work you do, nor do you want to spend too much money on something that is far more than you need. So, how do you pick one? It all starts with asking yourself the right

There have been dramatic shifts in music production over the last 10-15 years. If the phrase “big guitars” could be used to sum up the production style of the late 20th Century in general, the 21st Century could be described as “big drums.” The continued explosion of Hip Hop and EDM, combined with the proliferation of affordable, computer-based production setups, have both been contributing factors to the trend of drum-beat-driven production across the entire spectrum of musical genres. Hence, here are five secrets to programming banging,

When it comes to audio for video, no one ever seems to notice it unless it’s bad. And if it is bad, it can completely ruin your project. Tis the season to be spooky! Or at least, there’s a one in twelve chance that ’tis the season to be spooky. If you’re reading this in any month besides October, you have two choices: You can use these tidbits in sound-designing a spooky, scary voice for appropriate media (scary movies, web series, theatrical productions, spooky podcasts, etc.), or you can grab yourself a stale bag o’ candy corn and pretend it’s nigh on Halloween.
Either way, let’s get started.
Step 1: Record Thyself!
Let’s record the relatively common spooky phrase of “Bwah ha
