With the release of the Sound Devices MixPre II series, the already capable line of recorders is now expanded to include new functionality, increased precision, and heightened sonic performance. These new portable field recorders are presented in three configurations—the 3-channel / 5-track MixPre-3 II, the 6-channel / 8-track MixPre-6 II, and the 10-channel / 12-track MixPre-10 II—to accommodate an array of scenarios and working styles. All three models share some important and impressive features. They now boast 32-bit float recording and sample rates up to 192 kHz. You don’t need to know the science behind it to benefit from it, but definitely understand that 32-bit float lets you record at extremely high or low levels without clipping (it’s virtually impossible) or excess noise ruining your signal. Thanks to Class-A Kashmir mic preamps, an ultralow noise floor of -130 dBV, and a shocking 142 dB of dynamic range, your input sources can be captured in uncompromising detail.

The brand Sound Devices has long been well known and well regarded for producing rock-solid, high-quality field mixers and recorders. Even though its popular MixPre multi-track field recorders have won awards, Sound Devices wasn’t content to stop there. Whether you’re a location recordist, sound designer, podcaster, songwriter, or aspiring musician, the MixPre II series recorders can not only meet your needs, but also enlighten you to things you didn’t think were possible.

When it comes to synchronization, the three MixPre II recorders offer timecode enhancements that are sure to save the day. Each MixPre II has timecode I/O and an internal timecode generator with accuracy better than 0.2 ppm—that means just 0.5 frames of drift in 24 hours. If MixPre II is turned off or left cold and alone without a power source, it’ll still hold accurate timecode for up to four hours. More good news… With timecode connected from your camera to a Mix Pre II’s 3.5mm or HDMI timecode input, you can trigger recording directly from the camera.

An additional lifesaver is the auto-copy function. Though you’ll primarily be recording to a compatible SD card, you can turn on auto copy to automatically copy recorded tracks to a USB drive. Speaking of USB, you also have the option of streaming multichannel audio via USB, even while recording and mixing on the MixPre II.

The integrated mixer provides comprehensive tweakability via adjustable limiters, gain, pan, low-cut filtering, polarity, delay, and more. Remote control and external mixing are made possible by the free Wingman iOS/Android app and compatibility with USB control surfaces (four models are currently supported). For songwriters and musicians, purchasing the Musician Plug-In unlocks the ability to use a built-in metronome, overdub and bounce tracks, punch in/out, add reverb and vocal air effects, create cue markers, and import files. Additionally, owners of a MixPre-6 II or MixPre-10 II can download the free Ambisonics Plug-In to enable recording in 360° audio with real-time binaural monitoring.

To maximize versatility, you can power the MixPre II series recorders via AA or Sony L-mount batteries, USB bus power, or an external power source. So, whether you use a Mix Pre II in a sound bag or atop a camera or tripod, it can be configured to suit your unique situation.
