Heritage Announces i73 PRO Series USB-C Audio Interfaces

Musicians, engineers, and producers have been singing the praises of Heritage Audio’s carefully crafted recreations of the Neve 1073 preamp since they were first introduced in 2011. Now, Heritage Audio has expanded the lineup to include three USB-C audio interfaces, the i73 PRO One, the i73 PRO 2, and the i73 PRO Edge. Each interface allows users to record with a Class-A transformer-coupled 73-style preamp and brings that vintage golden-era analog character directly to their Mac and Windows productions. All the i73 PROs feature an advanced built-in mixer that allows the processing of tracks in real time via a comprehensive and ever-growing set of tools modeled after Heritage Audio’s own outboard and private gear collection running internally over the interface’s DSP. The system allows you to record dry and wet signals from the mixer to your DAW at the same time. You can even insert third-party native plug-ins via the mixer’s Aux channels.

Heritage Audio’s 73-Style Preamp in an Interface

The original Neve 1073 preamp has been a studio staple since it first arrived in the 1970s, gracing countless recordings and imparting a rich, round sound well suited to a wide range of microphones. Heritage Audio’s versions painstakingly reproduce that lush sound, with the preamp on these interfaces delivering up to 70 dB of gain and the transformer providing harmonics and subharmonics that impart a uniquely musical color to mic signals. The look of these new i73 interfaces isn’t radically different from the TT-73 and DTT-73 portable tabletop preamps, but the control surface has been moved to the top panel to accommodate Hi-Z inputs and headphone jacks on the front, while the back panel offers XLR/TRS combo inputs along with TRS I/O, MIDI I/O, a power connector, and (on the i73 PRO Edge) the ADAT I/O.

i73 PRO One and i73 PRO 2

The most portable option is the entry-level i73 PRO One, offering a total of two inputs and four outputs (including the front-panel stereo headphone output). You can plug a guitar into the front-panel dynamic JFET DI input or a mic/line source into the single rear-panel XLR/TRS combo input; a second rear-panel TRS input accommodates line-level sources. Also on the rear panel is a pair of ¼" TRS cables for monitors. The top panel sports the classic red gain knob along with a pair of output trim controls and a large volume dial with red LEDs that indicate whether it’s controlling the headphones or the monitors. Engage the pad button for loud sources and press the phantom power button to send 48V to condenser mics. A phase reversal button is also at your fingertips. Mono, mute, and dim buttons are provided, while 5-segment stereo metering helps you keep track of levels. If you need to track two mics through 73-style preamps, step up to the i73 PRO 2, which basically duplicates the layout of the PRO One, but adds a second mic input and the accompanying controls.

i73 PRO Edge

With four line inputs, four line outputs, and ADAT expandability, the i73 PRO Edge provides an ideal studio centerpiece for creating inspired analog-flavored productions. This unit also offers two mic preamps with top panel controls pretty much identical to the ones on the PRO 2. Two front panel DIs are provided, and two headphone jacks are here, as well. The ADAT input and output ports provide up to 8 channels of digital I/O. A set of LEDs indicates whether the large monitor knob is controlling the main monitor outputs, outputs 3 and 4 (great for an alternate set of speakers), or the headphone jacks.
