In-Car Chargers and More from Just Mobile

With the upsurge in mobile devices, the 12-volt cigarette lighter in trucks and cars has found a more worthy use as a means of empowerment for passengers’ personal electronics. Accessories maker Just Mobile has introduced a new line of vehicular adapters for use with Apple’s phones and tablets that also work with virtually anything that charges by USB cable. The products are Apple certified.

Also new from Just Mobile are a maximum charge supplemental battery and a pair of stylus touch pens that happen to use real ink.

The Highway in-car charger in white or black for iPhone, iPad and USB devices output 2.1 amps for quick charging. The cylindrical adapter with diamond-tread aluminum head and out-facing USB port is equipped with a fuse to protect a connected device from a possible power surge. A green LED imparts the charging status. A coiled cable is supplied with a standard male USB connector on one end and a 30-pin Apple dock connector on the other so you can leash the power adapter to your iPod touch, iPhone or iPad.

If you have another device that doesn’t contain the type of dock connector found on those Apple products but charges through a USB connection, you can attach your device to the Highway’s USB port using the cable that came with your device. Devices that have flip-out USB connectors can be attached directly to the Highway, though if it’s a Flip Video camera, for example, the device might get in way of the stick shift, so you’d be better off adding a USB extender such as the CablesToGo 3.3-foot (1 meter) USB A Male to A Female Extension Cable. That way the device can charge while nesting in the beverage holder.

Still, with mobile devices multiplying like rabbits, one USB power outlet in the car is never enough. Yet there’s only one car lighter. What to do? Just Mobile’s solution is to introduce adapters with two USB ports.

The Highway Pro in silver or black embeds one 2.1-amp USB port and one 1-amp USB port. The 2.1-amp output is meant for tablets and the 1A output for smartphones. The adapters provide surge protection, feature a green micro LED and come with a charging cable for use with an iPhone, iPad or iPod. In addition to being compatible with your iOS device, the adapter can charge virtually any USB-powered device.

The Just Mobile Gum Max Power Pack, meanwhile, isn’t necessarily for your car but for your backpack. It’s an external battery that will fully charge your iPad or other iOS device with juice to spare. It can power other smartphones and USB devices, too. The 10,400 mAh battery is encased in a high-grade aluminum shell and has a 2.1-amp output. It comes with an Apple dock connector and USB-to-microUSB cables plus a travel pouch.

Just Mobile’s AluPen Pros, an upgrade to the company’s AluPen styluses, have arrived in silver or black. What makes the Pro models different is that they combine a touch-screen stylus with a refillable ballpoint. On one end of the aluminum-constructed pen is a soft rubber stylus for precision control of any capacitive touch-screen device including iPads. On the other is a conventional retractable ballpoint with twist mechanism.

The pen is supplied with a high-quality Pelikan ballpoint refill. A replacement nib (you know, the touch tip) and a pen carrying case are included. Like your finger, the AluPen doesn’t use batteries. Unlike your finger, it can hit the mark accurately without causing you to first pinch and spread two fingers to enlarge the target.

I run a small driving school in Sudbury and these USB chargers are ideal. I especially like the idea of the dual socket one. I often use a camera to help out during the driving lessons, and this needs an external power source. Because of my job often means being out all day sometimes I need to charge my phone too. I've looked at split cigarette lighters, but these seem bulky and I don't want them to get in the way wile I'm teaching people to drive. The Gum Max is another good idea, probably not for the car, but useful for when I'm out and about as a backup.
