Stabilizing its compact-yet-fast zoom lineup, Tamron has just announced the development of the 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 telephoto lens, which is expected to arrive later in Fall 2023 for Sony E mirrorless cameras.
This second-generation telephoto zoom improves upon the popular original model with the inclusion of VC image stabilization, refined optics, tuned AF, and design updates, while still maintaining the bright f/2.8 maximum aperture and relatively sleek and lightweight form factor that made the original so beloved.
Tamron’s VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism helps to reduce the effects of camera shake, making this lens more suitable for low-light shooting and working with slower shutter speeds, especially at the 180mm focal length position. The update to the optics should naturally improve sharpness and overall image quality, but it also contributes to a closer minimum focusing distance of 11.8" at the 70mm position, compared to 33.5" from its predecessor, for working with nearby subjects. The lens’s updated VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Driver) linear motor also promises faster AF performance, better subject tracking capabilities, and higher torque, which carries over to more responsive and natural focusing performance for video recording.
In terms of physical design, the G2 version measures 6.2" long and weighs 1.88 lb, which is an increase of 0.3" in length and an extra 1.6 oz in weight to accommodate the VC mechanism that helps control camera shake more efficiently. This updated version also maintains the same moisture-resistant construction, features a fluorine coating on the front element, and shares the 67mm filter size as most other Tamron mirrorless lenses. Additionally, this G2 version gains support from Tamron’s Lens Utility and Lens Utility Mobile apps for fine-tuning various lens functions and customizing the handling experience.
