Nikon’s 2013 spring lineup of compact cameras brings an element of creative energy to the formerly static realm of point-and-shoot cameras. Whether you prefer ultimate manual control or look to the assistive functionality of automatic shooting modes, there’s a camera to fit your needs.

The Nikon COOLPIX A, which comes in black or silver, packs an assortment of professional qualities into a compact body. A 16.2MP DX-Format CMOS sensor renders large, crystal-clear images, while the lack of a low-pass filter maximizes resolution and sharpness. The EXPEED 2 image processor allows for high-speed performance that reduces the likelihood of noise (with an ISO up to 25600) and overheating. You can also shoot effortless video in full HD 1080p at 30 frames per second. A unique fixed focal length wide-angle lens (equivalent to 28mm in 35mm format) captures high-quality images comparable to those taken with a DSLR.  Refined optics ensure edge-to-edge sharpness, accurate color detail and limited aberrations. A 7-blade aperture keeps out-of-focus background elements soft, creating all-around natural, organic blur. In addition to autofocus, the COOLPIX A also gives you the freedom to focus manually. The focus ring, along with all other buttons, dials and switches, is designed with intuition and comfort in mind.

For the perfectionists, the COOLPIX A offers several methods for analyzing, editing and polishing images. A hot-shoe mount accepts a compatible optical viewfinder (DF-CP1) or Nikon Speedlight flash unit. Active D-lighting preserves the highlight and/or shadow detail that can often be lost when photographing high-contrast scenes. Picture Control gives you six customizable settings to choose from, allowing you to always have the right combination of sharpness, hue, contrast, etc. on hand for various shooting scenarios. The Virtual Horizon feature analyzes and displays horizontal inclination on the LCD screen as you shoot carefully composed still lifes, landscapes or architecture shots. An in-camera Retouch Menu lets you fine-tune and manipulate photos before they even reach the computer, while the supplied ViewNX 2 software processes high-quality RAW and HD files quickly and easily. To share your prized work, an optional WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter will sync your camera to a smart device. This enables you to upload directly to e-mail or social media services, as well as use your smartphone or tablet as a remote shutter release. The

The COOLPIX P520, available in black, silver or red, comes with a truly impressive 42x optical zoom. With a 35mm focal length equivalency of 24-1000mm, its versatility is noteworthy. Lens-shift Vibration Reduction (VR) technology compensates for camera movement, which is especially necessary at the longer end of the zoom range. ACTIVE Mode helps further minimize image blur when shooting from a moving or unstable position. An 18.1MP CMOS sensor with EXPEED C2 image processor results in high-quality still images as well as Full HD 1080p videos at 60 interlaced frames per second. The combination of auto and manual features makes learning the photographic process a smooth endeavor. In addition to COOLPIX Picture Control and Scene Auto Selector, exposure modes include Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and full Manual. The P520’s 3.2-inch LCD screen boasts a Vari-angle design that swivels, allowing you to compose shots comfortably from various shooting positions. The P330’s lens, which features Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass, equates to a focal-length range of 24-120mm in 35mm format. A maximum aperture of f/1.8, paired with a 7-blade aperture, expertly handles shooting in diminishing available light. Still images, as well as videos in Full HD 1080p, are notably clear—even in unsteady hands. The combination of VR image stabilization and Motion Blur Reduction compensate for both camera as well as subject movement. Pre-set shooting modes (such as Beach, Candlelight, Sports, etc.) can be selected to automatically determine the best exposure settings, or you can take the reins yourself with full Manual mode. In-camera image editing quickly retouches, crops, analyzes and process RAW files on the spot.
