Next-Gen Gaming Incoming—Sony Reveals PlayStation 5 Price and Availability

56Share

Oh gamers. You are such a delectable bunch. Being a gamer myself, and coming from the old GamePro days of the golden age of video games, I love gamers, I love gaming, and I love when a company makes a big to-do about even the most miniscule news.

Fortunately for us, the news today from Sony was not miniscule. As expected, Sony trotted out the PlayStation 5 (PS5) price and availability specs this afternoon, and it was right in the epicenter of everyone's predictions. The PS5 will be available November 12th in the U.S. (November 19th worldwide), with a two-tier price tag: $400 for the digital unit (no disc drive or ability to play disc-based games) and $500 for a traditional disc-based console.

Is it worth this price? All specs point to yes. Besides the much-touted ability for ray-tracing in games (ray-tracing is the ability to blend light and shadow, in ways that were previously seen only in CGI work in cinema, but has moved on to new NVIDIA graphics cards, and now the PS5), it's about 5 times faster than the launch edition of the PlayStation 4, and 2 ½ times faster than the PlayStation 4 Pro. It can deliver 8K graphics with frame rates up to 120fps.

The PS5 contains 16GB of RAM and a new AMD-based GPU with a maximum speed of 2.23 GHz. It can sustain performance at 10.28 teraflops—which, if you're not a gamer, is pretty impressive (although the Xbox Series X will be higher in this spec).

And what about the Xbox Series X? We're going to have a full-fledged console showdown on Explora this holiday season, but there's no doubt about it—the console wars of old have returned, with Sony and Microsoft battling for your gaming dollars this holiday. The Xbox Series X specs are equally impressive, although each console has its hits and its misses. More on that later.

Here's a quick spec comparison:

PLAYSTATION 5

  • 8-core 3.5 GHz AMD Zen 2 CPU
  • 10.3 teraflop AMD RDNA 2 GPU
  • 16 GB GDDR6 memory
  • 825 GB custom SSD
  • Release date: November 12th, 2020
  • Release versions: Digital ($399.99) and disc based ($499.99)

XBOX SERIES X

  • 8-core 3.8-GHz AMD Zen 2
  • 12 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 16GB GDDR6 memory, 12 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
  • Release date: November 10th, 2020
  • Release versions: Xbox Series X will only be in one version for $499, but there is a monthly installment plan that allows you to lease the system and enjoy XBOX Game Pass (their version of Netflix for games) for $34.99 per month for two years).

For those looking for a lower-cost experience even below that of the PS5 Digital Edition, there will also be a lower-spec'd version called the Xbox Series S with less power and a much lower price of $299 for those without a need for native 4K experiences.

For now, that's all you need to know. Which console will be better for you? For your family? For your wallet? We'll discuss all of that in an upcoming article.

NOTE: As stock is expected to be extremely limited, we do not expect to be able to make preorders available for the PS5 prior to launch. We apologize for any inconvenience and if you would like to be notified when the systems become available we ask that you please sign up below or on the product pages linked below.

When do you expect more stock of the PS5?

I have gotten locked out of the page to buy the system. Since we didn't know what time they will go on sale I had to keep checking back. PLEASE HELP

at what time will you guys release them today?

Is this something I should be F5ing at midnight or when your store opens or will they just randomly appear at some point on the 12th?

Thanks,

Andrew

Last question I promise! will you have something in place to help prevent bots from just spamming your site when pre orders go live?  like how one store made the ps5 $2500, and sent people who asked for notification a unique discount code, that can only be applied once that made the ps5 the $499 retail price? thank you!

Hi Durell -

We do our best to avoid selling to any kind of bot-aided entity Durell.

Hello: I can save games from the PlayStation store digital Ps4 to external usb hard drive? Thank you

Hi Ramon -

Per SONY:

If your PS4™ system storage doesn’t have enough space to install a game, you can use an external storage device to add more game storage. You can download games and add-ons from PlayStation®Store directly to your external storage device or move games from your PS4™ to the storage device. Storing game content on an external drive lets you take your games with you.

Requirements for an External Storage Device

  • A PS4™ system with system software 4.50 or newer.

  • An external storage device with:

  • USB 3.0 or later

  • Minimum of 250 GB and a maximum of 8 TB capacity.

  • Only one external device can be used at a time. You will get an error message, if the same application is installed on the system storage and the external storage device.

  • The external storage device must be connected directly into the PS4™.

Many items that we carry do offer Free Expedited Shipping. However, the shipping options for the PS5 are yet to be determined, since it is not available for pre-order. You may sign up on the item page for an e-mail notification when the PS5 will go on pre-order status.

Mark, you need to talk to Kirk. :-)  Are there going to be preorders available for this?

At some point, the PS5 will go on pre-order status. However, we do not have an exact date we can promise at this time.

I am still wary after reading that disclaimer in the article....

Sounds like pre orders aren’t happening.

this is ridiculous. are you doing pre orders or not. dont waste people's time.

They finally have a placeholder up. Hopefully it's coming soon.

Let's hope so. Sold out everywhere else.

Too bad there is no way of knowing when. When Walmart released the ps5 early, it really screwed many people. I have been looking forward for this for some time. It seems most the people who got one are just scalpers.  I wish we could at least know a time, at the very least.

email is so slow, by the time we get the email, it'll be sold out. guaranteed.

For sure, no doubt that will happen.

I guess I'm just glad Mircrosoft is ready for pre orders. You should be able to get that on day one if you're worried about playing Cyberpunk, like myself. All the launch exclusives will be a moment. This is a disaster of epic proportions. retailers should be strung up and Sony should be stoned for being such idiots.

I see what you mean. Personally , I have no interest in the Xbox, I would just get Cyberpunk on pc. I wanted the rtx 3080 gpu but that sold out instantly. I was ready right away and it was gone. B&H doesn't know where theirs will go on sale. The PS5 has all the games I want, it sucks it's gone. Yeah I don't know who is to blame, Walmart or Sony. Probably both.

they could have at least put up a placeholder page but nah. lmao

Ya, I also wanted a 3080, but retailers are terrible. Nvidia put it up late, Best Buy went early. Ugh. The Sony issue rests on the shoulders of both. Sony should have dedicated a time to it, like they promised. Walmart and Gamestop should not have gone at some random time in the middle of the afternoon. Stupid.

The whole thing sucks, maybe b&h will pull through.

sony should step up and cancel the allocations for the retailers that went early.

I wish, only if.

Still have my fingers crossed for B&H. Since the page is up, but in may not be available until launch. Maybe just maybe.

such a horrible pre-order process. so sad that bhphoto wont even tell us when preorders will go live

The entire pre order launch for this is disgusting. No one knows what's going on because Sony just wanted to beat Mircrosoft to the punch. In typical fashion, Sony has created a giant mess.

Thanks!!

Where do we sign up to be notified?

We just added a notify me feature to the article. Please see above.

When does pre-orders start?

Unfortunately we don't have a date yet. If you sign up to be notified will let you know.

Hopefully they update their site and take the pre-orders when they open.
