There are two types of rooms in which you can install a home theater projector: ideal and less-than-ideal. An ideal projector installation will be in a completely dark, preferably windowless room, which would ensure that the only light hitting the screen comes from the projector. For installation in an ideal room, you can choose nearly any projector (that meets your other needs, such as resolution, connectivity, image size, and other requirements) and achieve enjoyable results. Most of us, however, have ambient light challenges that projectors would need to overcome. For these installations, a high-brightness projector is required, such as the new Optoma UHZ50.
As you can probably guess, the UHZ50 has a high brightness output (3000 lumens, to be exact), which can overcome a good amount of ambient light—though I’d still recommend closing your curtains, at least. It uses a laser light source, so you’ll never have to replace a lamp, making it a good choice for installation on the ceiling or in other hard-to-reach places. Its 1.3x optical zoom adds to its installation flexibility by allowing you to enlarge the image; the projector can be placed anywhere between 3.9 and 26.6" from your wall or (preferably) screen to project diagonal images from 34.1 to a whopping 302.4".
XPR technology enables the micromirrors on the Full HD chip to shift at the microsecond level to produce a 4K UHD image on your screen for a highly detailed image with compatible content; the HDR10 and HLG HDR formats are supported to provide enhanced brightness and contrast levels for HDR-encoded videos. The projector is also 3D-capable when paired with DLP Link 3D glasses and a 3D-capable source device and media.
Three HDMI ports allow for connectivity of your cable/satellite box, Blu-ray Disc player, and gaming system all at once. An optical and a 3.5mm audio output let you connect to any audio system if the dual onboard 10W speakers aren’t quite enough for your space; one of the HDMI ports is eARC-compatible, so object-based multi-channel audio from streaming sources can flow back to your receiver or soundbar system to provide an immersive audio experience.
When installed, the included WUSB Wi-Fi adapter equips the projector with Wi-Fi 4 connectivity and enables features like Alexa, Google Assistant, and IFTTT control. For traditional control, the included remote control is backlit for ease of use in dark rooms.
