Exciting news came out of Microsoft’s Surface Event on October 2. While Microsoft’s future looks impressive with the Surface Neo and Duo, due out for the 2020 holidays, there were plenty of interesting current-gen models announced to hold you over until then.
13.5 and 15" Surface Laptop 3
As expected, Microsoft updated the Surface Laptop series with the 13.5" Surface Laptop 3. It features a 10th-Gen Intel® Core™ processor and now comes with the highly requested USB Type-C port. Available with either an Intel® Core™ i5-1035G7 or an Intel® Core™ i7-1065G7 processor, both processors utilize integrated Intel® Iris Plus™ graphics and are up to two times faster than the Surface Laptop 2. The 13.5" Surface Laptop 3 still maintains the PixelSense Display with 2256 x 1504 resolution (201 ppi) and 10-point touch support. The 13.5" Surface Laptop 3 is available with up to 16GB of LPDDR4x RAM and up to a 1TB SSD. Microsoft also included Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) connectivity.
In addition to the usual colors of Platinum, Cobalt Blue, and Matte Black, Microsoft added another one called Sandstone. Also, it’s important to note that the Alcantara-covered palm rest is only available on certain colors, which are the Platinum and Cobalt Blue models. If you opt for Matte Black or Sandstone, you’ll be getting the metal palm rest.
While the Surface Laptop was only available in the 13.5" screen variant before, Microsoft introduced the 15" Surface Laptop 3. While it may just seem like the 13.5" Surface Laptop 3 with a larger screen, the 15" Surface Laptop 3 houses Microsoft Surface Edition AMD Ryzen processors, made specifically for the Surface.
The 15” Surface Laptop 3 is available with either an AMD Ryzen 5 3580U processor with AMD Radeon Vega 9 graphics or an AMD Ryzen 7 3780U processor with Radeon RX Vega 11 graphics. The AMD processors make the 15" Surface Laptop 3 up to twice as fast as the Surface Laptop 2. Also with a PixelSense Display, the 15" Surface Laptop 3 features 2496 x 1664 resolution (201 ppi). Like the 13.5" Surface Laptop 3, the 15" model also has the USB Type-C port. The 15" Surface Laptop 3 is available with up 16GB of DDR4 RAM and up to a 1TB SSD.
Microsoft stated that the Surface Laptop 3 supports Instant On and provides up to 11.5 hours of battery life on a single charge, plus standby that extends your battery while you’re away. When you need to recharge, the Surface Laptop 3 supports fast charging so you can unplug as soon as possible. Both the 13.5" and 15" models employ Windows 10 Home, including password-free Windows Hello sign-in, as well as secure online cloud storage with fully integrated OneDrive.
Surface Pro 7
Microsoft also updated its Surface Pro line with the 12.3" Surface Pro 7. Now available with a 10th-Gen Intel® Core™ processor, the Surface Pro 7 is more than twice as fast as the Surface Pro 6. The Surface Pro 7 also adopted the USB Type-C port as well for connecting to displays, docking stations, and compatible mobile devices.
The Surface Pro 7 is available with a 10th-Gen Intel® Core™ i3-1005G1 dual-core processor, an Intel® Core™ i5-1035G4 quad-core processor, or an Intel® Core™ i7-1065G7 quad-core processor. Integrated Intel® UHD Graphics are used with the Intel® Core™ i3 model, while Intel® Iris Plus Graphics are reserved for the Intel® Core™ i5 and i7 models. For configurations, the Surface Pro 7 can be outfitted with up to 16GB of LPDDR4x RAM and up to a 1TB SSD.
The 12.3" PixelSense Display features 2736 x 1824 resolution (267 ppi) as well as 10-point touch support, which automatically adjusts to your environment, thanks to its ambient light sensor. The installed operating system is Windows 10 Home. The Surface Pro 7 supports Instant On, as well as Fast Charging, providing up to 10.5 hours of battery life on a single charge. The Surface Pro 7 also includes Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) connectivity.
The Surface Pro 7 is available in Platinum or Matte Black finishes. While the Surface Pro 7 works well on its own, you’ll be even more productive if you pair it with a Signature Type Cover, a Surface Arc Mouse, and a Surface Pen (all sold separately).
The inclusion of the USB Type-C port on the Surface Laptop 3 and Surface Pro 7 is a welcomed addition. It will help unify all your devices together (and hopefully cut down on the number of cables we have to carry). The 10th-Gen Intel® Core™ processors, as well as the Microsoft Surface Edition AMD Ryzen processors, will provide fast, powerful performance. Instant On and Fast Charging will help you get the most out of the Surface Laptop 3 and Pro 7.
The Surface Laptop 3 and Pro 7 are available for preorders now and will ship on October 22nd.
